World Heritage

The first is from June 1997, which saw the inclusion of Cilento in the prestigious network of Mab UNESCO biosphere reserves (where Mab stands for “Man and biosphere”): throughout the planet (in over 80 states) there are approximately 350 of these particular protected areas, which serve to protect biodiversity and promote development compatible with nature and culture.
Thus the Cilento Park today, in addition to its precious natural habitats, can with greater right safeguard those scenarios consecrated by the history of man and permeated by its traditions: villages and ancient paths, even if “leopard-spotted” in a more wide to defend and promote. The park, in fact, if young, is seen by many as hope and an instrument for the development of Cilento.
Second recognition in 1998 with its inclusion together with the archaeological sites of Paestum, Velia and Vallo di Diano, in the list of world heritage sites. Castellabate
In 1998 it was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO and is included in the list of “The most beautiful villages in Italy”. Due to its natural and environmental heritage, the sea and coast of Castellabate have been under marine biological protection since 1972, representing one of the first examples of a marine park in Europe, subsequently in 2009 the protected marine area of Santa Maria di Castellabate was established . Castellabate has been awarded various awards such as the 2012 Blue Flag from the Fee, the 2012 Green Flag, the “4 sails” in the 2012 Blue Guide and “The most beautiful are you” from Legambiente and promoter of initiatives such as those of “Città del bio” .
